The attestation sur l'honneur (sworn statement) is a written declaration by which a person certifies the accuracy of a fact concerning them (residence, income, family situation, absence of a conviction, and so on). It is often requested to complete an administrative file when a standard supporting document is not available. It is only valid if it is dated, signed and truthful: a false statement is an offense punishable under the Code penal (French Criminal Code). This form is in English, but the document is generated in French, ready to sign and use in France.

Frequently asked questions
Does a sworn statement have legal value?
Yes, it is an item of evidence. It engages the responsibility of its author: producing a false statement to obtain a benefit is an offense punishable by up to 3 years' imprisonment and a 45,000 euro fine (article 441-1 of the Code penal / French Criminal Code).
Does it need to be certified or legalized?
As a rule, no. Since 2000, the administration can no longer require certification of a signature affixed to an attestation sur l'honneur (sworn statement) for an internal process. Some specific procedures may, however, require legalization at the mairie (town hall).
Must it be handwritten?
No, it may be typed. It is nonetheless advisable to add by hand the mention "Fait pour servir et valoir ce que de droit" (issued to serve and be valid as of right), the date and the signature, which strengthens its value.
Who can write a sworn statement?
Any adult with legal capacity, regarding a fact that concerns them personally. One can only make a sworn statement about facts of which one has direct knowledge.
