Employment contract (CDI, permanent contract)

The CDI (contrat a duree indeterminee, open-ended contract) is the standard form of the employment relationship. Although it can in theory be verbal, a written contract is essential in practice: it sets out the position, pay, working hours, place of work, trial period and the applicable convention collective. Since the transposition of the 2019 European directive, the employer must give the employee written notice of the essential elements of the employment relationship. A clear contract protects both parties and prevents disputes. This form is in English, but the document is generated in French, ready to sign and use in France.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CDI have to be in writing?

A full-time CDI can in theory be verbal, but the employer must give the employee a written document setting out the essential elements of the employment relationship. A part-time CDI, however, must always be in writing. In practice, a written contract is always recommended.

Is a trial period (periode d'essai) mandatory?

No, it only exists if it is provided for in the contract or the offer letter. Its maximum length depends on the employee's status: 2 months for manual and office workers, 3 months for supervisors and technicians, 4 months for managers (cadres), with any renewal governed by the convention collective.

Must the convention collective be mentioned?

Yes. The employee must be informed of the convention collective applicable to the company. It determines many rights (minimum wages, notice periods (preavis), leave). Its name and IDCC number must appear in the contract and on the payslip.
