The cancellation letter lets you end a subscription or a continuing contract: insurance, complementary health cover (mutuelle), internet or phone plan, gym, energy supply, press subscriptions and more. Depending on the type of contract, the law governs the exit conditions: the loi Chatel requires the provider to remind you of the cancellation deadline before automatic renewal, and the loi Hamon lets you cancel many insurance contracts at any time after one year. A clear letter, stating the contract references and sent by lettre recommandee (registered mail), secures the process and proves its date. Frequently asked questions
Should the letter be sent by registered mail?
It is strongly recommended. Many contracts require it, and above all a lettre recommandee (registered mail) with acknowledgment of receipt gives you proof of the sending date, which starts the notice period. Some providers now accept cancellation online or by email.
What is the loi Chatel?
It protects consumers against automatic renewals: the provider must inform you, between three months and fifteen days before the renewal date, of your right not to renew. If it fails to do so, you may cancel at any time after the renewal.
Can I cancel my insurance at any time?
Since the loi Hamon, most insurance contracts (car, home, affinity products) can be cancelled at any time after one year of commitment, at no cost and without giving a reason. Complementary health cover (mutuelle) also benefits from mid-term cancellation after one year.
Does a notice period apply?
It depends on the contract. Many subscriptions provide for a notice period (often 1 to 2 months) running from receipt of the letter. Check your general terms and conditions. The letter requests cancellation at the renewal date or at the end of the applicable notice period.
