The rent receipt (quittance de loyer) is the document by which the owner (or their agent) certifies that the tenant has paid their rent and charges for a given period. It serves as proof of payment and is often used as proof of address or to support an application (housing, loan, benefits). The law requires the landlord to provide it free of charge, and to distinguish the amount of rent from that of charges. This form is in English, but the document is generated in French, ready to sign and use in France.

Can the landlord charge for the rent receipt?
No. Article 21 of the law of 6 July 1989 requires the rent receipt (quittance) to be provided free of charge to the tenant who requests it. Any clause to the contrary is deemed unwritten.
Is the rent receipt mandatory?
The landlord is only required to issue it if the tenant requests it. However, once it is requested, they cannot refuse. It must only be issued if the rent has actually been paid in full.
What to do in the event of partial payment?
If the tenant has only paid part of the rent, the landlord issues a receipt (recu, not a quittance) stating the amount paid. The rent receipt only certifies a full payment for the period concerned.
Can the rent receipt be sent by email?
Yes. Since the ALUR law, the rent receipt can be sent electronically if the tenant agrees. A signed PDF sent by email is perfectly valid.
